Gun owners had best go check their dictionary if they think they "suffer" with stricter gun laws
The tug of war over guns in America seems to be over suffering. While gun rights extremists claim that they would suffer under restrictive gun safety laws, their arguments pale in comparison to those affected by gun violence. Not by a long shot.
I posted the preamble to the U.S. Constitution this morning on my Facebook page. I felt compelled to after the shooting Thursday night in a Louisiana movie theater. In a short fifty-two words, it states:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
I agree with this in the sense that I don’t think restricting guns to “law-abiding” gun owners trumps Americans’ rights to “Domestic tranquility” and “general welfare”. No sir, not even remotely.
And neither does Sandy Anglin Phillips, mother of one of the victims of the Aurora movie theater shooting. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence shared the feelings of the mother of one of the slain victims in the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting. This post by Sandy Anglin Phillips is a MUST read:
“For 3 years I have protected my heart from too much brutal information about Jessi’s death. I knew she had been shot 6 times and I knew she had been shot in the head with an armor piercing .223 bullet. Today I read the autopsy report. I chose not to view the photos, but viewed a diagram of what was done to her tiny body and read the horrible words in the report.
Her right leg was ripped apart and the bullet entered into her left leg. Her abdomen received 4 bullets and received additional fragments. She received fragments in her right wrist and several other places. Her left clavicle was broken by a bullet.
My beautiful daughter’s headshot put a 5 inch hole through her orbital (eye) and blew her brains out. A 5 inch hole.
I share this horror because no mother, father, family should ever have to walk this horrendous path of pain caused by gun violence. Those of you who are already involved in making change happen….YOU are our heroes. Those of you who aren’t….don’t wait until this is YOUR story.”
In this country, today, this very day, this can happen to any of us. If you think it can’t, you are in intense denial. And the fact is, we can all do something about this.
So, if you, gun rights extremists, think you’re going to have to “suffer” a little in order to secure our right to live free and safe, you are the whiniest child that ever existed, throwing a tantrum over dangerous toys you want but shouldn’t have. Don’t you EVER think that your “suffering” with stricter gun laws would in any way compare to Sandy Anglin Phillips’ suffering.
Don’t you even dare.
