Nearly four years after losing to the most unlikable candidate in modern American history, Hillary Clinton continues to reveal her character. Her endorsement of Democratic incumbent Eliot Engel suggests she’s willing to back anyone running against a progressive platform.

There are two important facts that need to be pointed out about the 16-term congressman. First, he’s an absentee congressman who rarely spends any time in the district he represents.

Last month, an Atlantic reporter caught Engel in a lie about being in his district for a coronavirus-related face mask giveaway. Two weeks ago, Engel got caught on a hot mic. When asking to speak at a press conference related police brutality protests in his district with the Bronx Borough President, he said “If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care.”

In addition to Engel shunning his voters, it appears he’s also taking money from a conservative GOP super-PAC. The super PAC is called Americans for Tomorrow’s Future and the Center for Responsive Politics lists it as “Republican/Conservative.”

So, Hillary Clinton is endorsing someone who flat out said he doesn’t care about his constituents and who doesn’t mind taking money from the same firm helping to fund the campaign of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The PAC money from Americans for Tomorrow’s Future was siphoned through another PAC called Democratic Majority for Israel. So far Eliot Engel’s primary campaign has spent $600,000 to silence his primary challenger.

Introducing Jamaal Bowman

Following Engel’s hot mic blunder, his primary challenger, Jamaal Bowman has received a host of high-profile endorsements and has raised over $1,000,000. His growing list of endorsements come from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and even the New York Times.

Jamaal Bowman’s values and ideology certainly resides on the progressive side. It’s no wonder the Democratic establishment is pulling out all the stops to help Eliot Engel. The last thing they want is another Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York trying to actually change things.

Bowman, despite being on the “people side” of the issues, is still the underdog. Engel has a much bigger war chest including $1 million of outside corporate money alone. He also has received funding from two other dark-money groups that can’t be traced.

The main reason Engel still has so much establishment support could be his unwavering support of Israel. Engel is the chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee. His position may explain why pro-Israel groups have contributed more than $1.3 million to Engel over the course of his career. In return for the financial support, Engel has voted against important legislation like the Iran nuclear deal in 2015.

Again, this is the type of person Mrs. Clinton supports. And people wonder why she is so loathed on the left, let alone the right. The Clintons have been on the wrong side of history so often that I wonder how much weight her endorsements actually carries. She may be doing Engel more harm than good.
