Joe Crowley’s loss to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018 was a shock to the political establishment and the mainstream media that covers it. New York’s 14th district, hasn’t been the same since. The newly elected progressive champion shot into the national spotlight while Mr. Crowley, now former Democratic Caucus Chairman, did what all corporate Democrats turn to after they lose, lobbying.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an organizer for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, instantly became public hero #1 for progressives and public enemy #1 for conservatives and neoliberals. AOC is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. In a country where economics is dictated by both parties on behalf of corporations, you just knew she was going to ruffle a lot of feathers.
Boy, did she ever. Her media coverage, particularly on the right, has been negative to say the least, especially when it comes to her ideology. On the other hand, her progressive polices have received the same rotten treatment on more so-called liberal publications. All of which suggests that she’s actually doing her job.
When the president of the united states is pressured to call you out and lie about you, you’re obviously doing something right. Although to be fair that doesn’t take much these days. Still, she earned her wings.
Just look at her Committee work. She poses the questions few people are willing to ask in order to pursue the truth. Few can forget when she exposed America’s broken campaign finance system.
Her so called lightning round “Corruption Game” with members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform is now legendary.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has taken on big pharma. She pushed for the Green New Deal and had to defend it brilliantly against both political parties after her bill was shot down 57-0 in the Senate. She openly called Trump a racist. AOC even subpoenaed Kellyanne Conway. The congresswoman has clearly had a busy couple years.
America being the oligarchy it has become, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has made a lot of enemies in that short amount of time. Most of that resentment comes from Wall-Street of course, and they feel they’ve found the perfect puppet to take on AOC.
That candidate is former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera. She has the backing of the conservative U.S. Chamber of Commerce and multiple powerful Wall Street figures. The likes of which include Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon and Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman.
In case you were wondering, Caruso-Cabrera was a registered Republican until 2015. She published a book called “You Know I’m Right: More Prosperity, Less Government.” She is a free market neoliberal through and through. Forty years ago she would have no business running as a democrat, these days, being pro-choice automatically qualifies you.
She has raised about $2 million for her primary against Ocasio-Cortez, but despite Wall Street’s deep pockets, AOC can still outspend her 5 to 1. Still AOC warned her supporters Sunday they “CANNOT take this seat for granted.”
She warned supporters on Facebook to go out and vote. “Wall Street is pouring millions of dollars to unseat me in this Tuesday’s election, that’s what happens when you put people before profit.”
Back in 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shocked many by defeating Crowley. Progressives were overjoyed, but not surprised. We saw her interviews, we saw her amazing campaign in action, and Crowley didn’t see it coming.
This time however, in Covid hit New York and with everyone paying attention, all bets are off. It would be a major progressive disaster if the roles reversed themselves and AOC found herself on the outside looking in like Crowley a couple short years ago. Please go out and vote, and New Yorkers, don’t forget to vote for Jamaal Bowman as well. Change will never come with so-called centrists running the show.
