The United States had a brutal week. The nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci said, “Right now, if you look at the number of cases, it’s quite disturbing.” President Trump meanwhile suggested that Covid-19 would again “disappear.” Knowing Trumps penchant for loyalty, one must wonder if he’ll fire Fauci as the Pandemic spikes across the country.
In a livestream with the American Medical Association Fauci continued to say “We’re setting records, practically every day, of new cases in the numbers that are reported. That clearly is not the right direction.”
Fauci is right of course. His comments came as daily cases skyrocketed past 50,000 in the U.S. for the first time this week. Only 10 states are showing declines in the rate of daily infections. Six states showed single-day records on Thursday. You know it’s bad when the Texas Governor mandates face masks be worn.
On Tuesday, during a Senate committee hearing, Fauci cautioned lawmakers that the U.S. could reach 100,000 new cases a day. “I can’t make an accurate prediction, but it is going to be very disturbing, I can guarantee you that,” Fauci told Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) “Because when you have an outbreak in one part of the country, even though in other parts of the country they’re doing well, they are vulnerable.”
So, my question is how long will President Trump allow this to go on? Not the Pandemic of course, that’ll disappear. I’m talking about Dr. Fauci contradicting him on a daily basis. If history is any indication, Trump will fire Fauci sooner than later.
“Fire Fauci” was a popular right-wing slogan back in April when the doctor first started contradicting Trump. Surprisingly, Trump held back and chose to ignore him instead. As cases declined the doctor spoke less. Now, as the virus rages out of control, there seems to be only one way to silence the nation’s top infectious disease expert.
Trump, a reality show host best know for his catchphrase “You’re Fired!” has been continuing that tradition in the White House. The President has an 88% turnover rate for his “A” team. Seven of his own cabinet members have resigned under pressure. The amount of turnover in his administration far exceeds that of two term presidents, and he has yet to finish the first (assuming he gets that far).
The more Fauci speaks his mind or speaks truth to power (same thing these days) the more likely he will lose his job. Trump has never tolerated disloyalty and Fauci seems to be a man of integrity, not willing to lie for anyone.
As the pandemic worsens, one has to wonder whether the chants of “fire Fauci” will come roaring back or Trump will continue to spare him. It likely depends on how Fox News calls it.
